This article outlines changes to private health insurance claims and payments that Medipass will be making between December 2020 and March 2021.

There are two components to a private health insurance transaction in Medipass; the claim, and the gap payment (paid by a patient in Medipass via a Visa or Mastercard debit or credit card).

While the claim is always powered by HICAPS, there have been two ways to process the gap payment; either via a payment facility powered by NAB (also called HICAPS Go or the “NAB Payment Facility”) or by Medipass Card Payments.

From 5th March 2021, Medipass will no longer support the NAB Payment Facility, and all Visa and Mastercard debit and credit card payments will be processed via our own payment solution, Medipass Card Payments. This solution delivers you the latest payment functionality including Apple Pay, Google Pay and the ability to enter your patient’s card details on their behalf.

Importantly, this change does not affect your ability to process claims to private health insurers via HICAPS.

In addition, we will no longer be supporting the following functionality:

  • Patient accounts: In order to streamline how patient card details are collected and stored, we are progressively enabling healthcare providers to capture and save these details on the patient’s behalf, in the patient record managed by you. This reduces the burden on your patients, and enables a faster and more seamless payment experience.
  • The HICAPS Go mobile app: From 18th December 2020, the HICAPS Go App will no longer be available for patients to download from the Apple and Google App Stores. This does not impact HICAPS claiming or payments - payment requests will continue to be sent to patients via an SMS (and not via the app).

Action required from you

Many of you are already using Medipass Card Payments. If you are still using the NAB payment facility (that comes with HICAPS Go), you will need to migrate across before 5th March 2021. There is no other action you are required to take, though during this period of transition, in some circumstances, you may be required to re-enter card details for some patients.
